A dream may come from Satan:
Let’s see some Bible passages from the book of Job in different English versions:
“If I say, ‘My bed will comfort me, my couch will ease my complaint,” NASV
“…then you frighten me with dreams, and terrify me with visions.” Job 7:14 CSV
“…but you torture me with terrible dreams.” Job 7:14 CEV
“Terrors frighten him on every side,
and chase him at his heels.” Job 18:11 ESV
Job was a righteous man, but for some reason God allowed Satan to touch and destroy everything Job had, including his family, finances, and health, and Job was also being tormented in his dreams by this evil enemy. So, whenever we have a bad dream, or a night terror, its obvious that Satan is the source. But what gives him a legal right to enter our dreams? I will mention just a few of the reasons why our enemy comes in our dreams.
4- Ancestral rights, generation curses: A generational curse is a penalty or punishment that was meant to be for a person and all his descendants due to fines and favors he didn’t pay, rules he broke, and money he borrowed and didn’t pay back. So this penalty will be enforced by evil spirits that are going to chase after this men’s children and relatives until someone on that family get the knowledge of the word of God and the authority in Jesus’s name and brake the covenants and remove the power of those curses and cancel the spiritual debts of that family. By confessing their sins, and receiving forgiveness and freedom in Jesus. “Our fathers sinned, and are no more; It iswe who have carried their sin. Servants rule over us; There is no one to rescue us out of their hand.” Lamentations 5:7-8. When people sin, those sins and their respective spirits, are going to torment and visit their children in their lives, and even in their dreams. The devil and his demons are servants or former servants of God, those servants’ rule over us if we open doors with sin, or if we lack knowledge of the spiritual laws. “Christ purchased our freedom and redeemed us from the curse of the Law and its condemnation by becoming a curse for us—for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who hangs [crucified] on a tree (cross)”— in order that in Christ Jesus the blessing of Abraham might also come to the Gentiles, so that we would all receive [the realization of] the promise of the [Holy] Spirit through faith.” Galatians 3:13-14. SO when we know that there is law of emancipation, in our behalf that brake every power that the enemy have over us, then we have to enforce that law, because the evil spirits are not going to leave so easily, they will have to be evicted from our lives, families and territories. That’s why Jesus said that in his name we shall cast out devils, because there are devils within people, inside of families, and inside of cities and nations, keeping people in bondage, tormenting them in their minds and dreams, preventing them to come to the knowledge of God, and destroying relationships among family members for generations.
We become God’s children when we believe in Jesus, and we receive authority to cast out and subdue every servant of the darkness. Because of the lack of knowledge about what legal right our parents gave to the enemy many of us are being tormented in our dreams and daily lives by spirits that our ancestors entertained with their sinful lives, disobedience to God and covenants with the enemy. So, we need to pray and fast repenting for our own sins and our ancestor’s sins, renounce those covenants, curses and penalties that belonged to them, and disassociate ourselves and our descendants from any demonic altars our ancestors served to, and close every door to those old demons, and bind them, cast them out of our in our lives and dreams in Jesus’s name.
5-Participation in the occult: When people go to participate in satanic rituals, request the help of a warlock, witch, or sorcerer to find love, to recover a relationship, to get money or fame, to heal from a sickness, or to seek vengeance against an enemy, they open the door to the devil. He is a thief and comes only to steal, to kill and to destroy, so he will be present in the dreams of those seeking his help, since he is the source of all lies and evil practices.
6- Sexual issues (unnatural sex, sex with animals or with people from the same gender, sex outside of the marriage, pornography, sexual fantasies, masturbation, voyeurism, etc.)
All these practices contaminate human body, soul and spirit. God created human’s male and female to form a family and to be a picture of God’s glory. But sin, corrupted many people’s minds and the way they see everything. The act of sex is not only physical, since humans are a spirit living in a body, that have a soul, and that soul has a mind, will, and emotions. So, sex between two interconnects every part of their beings. Therefore, the nature, personality, bad habits, sickness and diseases, generational curses, and evil spirits are going to get transferred during each sexual act. Opening the door to all these evil spirits to visit one person and another and to have sex with them willingly or unwillingly, causing them sleep paralysis, drunkenness or hypnotizing them in dreams, so these spirits rape them. A person may even get married to a spirit in dreams, masqueraded like their real spouse or fiancé. So, even if the person doesn’t want to be in that relationship ends up being forced by the spiritual marriage certificate. Many people are being tormented by this, and some of them day and night. If anyone wants to be free, I recommend that they renounce and sever any sexual relationship outside of marriage, break any soul tie with that other person, close every door, repent and pray to divorce from every spiritual marriage certificate and spiritual spouse and Jesus’s name.
7-Problems with the tongue (lying, cursing, tale bearing, slander, false witness, profane language, blasphemy):
“Do not judge and criticize and condemn [others unfairly with an attitude of self-righteous superiority as though assuming the office of a judge], so that you will not be judged [unfairly]. For just as you [hypocritically] judge others [when you are sinful and unrepentant], so will you be judged; and in accordance with your standard of measure [used to pass out judgment], judgment will be measured to you.” Matthew 7:1-2. AMP
“But I tell you, on the day of judgment people will have to give an accounting for every careless or useless word they speak. For by your words [reflecting your spiritual condition] you will be justified and acquitted of the guilt of sin; and by your words [rejecting Me] you will be condemned and sentenced.” Matthew 12:36-37. The words we say have a spiritual weight so what we say attracts life or death towards us and others. It will attract light or darkness, the presence of God or the presence of evil spirits. While we sleep, we can see the spirit realm. The words we speak are spirit, therefore, they become part of the spiritual atmosphere that we live in. So, what we see in our dreams gives us a diagnosis of the spiritual atmosphere we are in. The same spirits that are operating alongside us in a daily basis are going to be the ones we normally see in our dreams. That is why we need to be careful about the way we talk, and not to entertain evil thoughts. We don’t have to be gossiping about others, or cursing others. One day we will have to give accountability for everything we have said.
8- Drug and alcohol use: Every time people use alcohol, drugs, or other substances; they lose contact with reality and open themselves up to demonic spirits that are going to also become part of their dreams.
9- Bad company: “He who walks [as a companion] with wise men will be wise,
But the companions of [conceited, dull-witted] fools [are fools themselves and] will experience harm.”
Proverbs 13:20. AMP
hanging out with the wrong people will open your life to be influenced, and enter in by the same spirits that these people have, and they can also appear in your dreams.
10- Sent as a revenge or deliberately done from human enemies: Some people hate others and make witchcraft spells and send them to the person and these spells come in form of dreams, sometimes some of Satan’s human servants travel in the spirit and appear in people’s dreams. Other times the witchcraft spell and the spirits that are sent to enforce it, show up in dreams, looking like a bird, or serpent attacking, the person, chasing after, and trying to kill them. The person may see someone in dreams cursing them, or having sex with them, or giving them food. After waking up from such a dreams, if the person remember the whole dream or not, they should pray renouncing such a dream and canceling the covenant that was taking place in that dream, and that what the enemy is plotting against them it will not going to become a reality in their lives neither their loved ones lives in Jesus’s name.
11- Sleeping in spiritually contaminated places: There are places like hotel rooms, old houses where people practiced witchcraft or made sacrifices and covenants, places where violent events occurred, etc. that are a habitation of all kinds of wicked spirits, so people may have night terrors, sleep paralysis, and nightmares when the sleep in such places during the day or night. That’s why anytime we go to another town, or country, and have to sleep and someone’s house or hotel room, we need to pray for God in Jesus’s name to deliver us from any evil thing that happened in that place, and from any torment from spirits that have the legal right to abide there, that God may send his angels to subdue any evil spirit and to place a hedge of protection around us, so we may sleep in peace.
12- Having cursed object in your room or house:
There are objects that were consecrated to demonic entities. Therefore, this will open portals in the spirit realm, and attract whom these objects belong to. Certain figurines, pictures, paintings, crystals, obelisks, five-pointed stars, crucifixes, rosaries, red ribbons, dream catchers, images of saints, images of false gods, angels and demons. Toys, goblins, dolls, action figures, and cartoons that are under satanic covenants, may also torment children and adults at night, while they are sleeping in the houses where these objects are.
13- Heavy metal music and other demon invoking practices: That music is mostly used to invoke or call upon Satan and his demons and unclean spirits the person who listen to that music may be tormented in dreams and visited by the spirits being called in the music. The people who listen to this music in their dreams,they have interaction with evil spirits disguised as someone they admire, or know, and while they are dreaming, they may hear the music playing in their head.
14-Rebelion and stubbornness:
“For rebellion is as [serious as] the sin of divination (fortune-telling),
And disobedience is as [serious as] false religion and idolatry.
Because you have rejected the word of the Lord,
He also has rejected you as king.” 1 Samuel 15:23. AMP
“For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as idolatry and teraphim. Because thou hast rejected the word of Jehovah, he hath also rejected thee from being king.” 1 Samuel 15:23 ASV
Rebellion is the action to disobey, gossip about, or to come against anyone and anything that represent authority. And that includes, parents, teachers, government authorities, police officers, etc. Anytime someone is operating in rebellion open the door to spirits of divination, idolatry and false religion, and they will visit the person in dreams to have sex with them, in order to seal covenants, to feed them in dreams, to have a meeting for agreement. That is when you may dream holding hands, hugging, greeting someone, walking with someone you know, or don’t know in a dream, or you are eating, or having a family reunion. Those spirit will come in person while you are awake, through people, videos, ideas or ads, inviting them to do such practices. All of these things give them legal rights to seal covenants with you and take over your life. Stubbornness is the act of having our personal opinion as a ruler, so we become our own idol or god. So that opens the door for idolatry spirit to come into that person’s dream and afflict them, torment them, try to choke them, sexually abuse them, and they hear evil voices in their mind.
15- Because the person has evil spirits within:
“Now it came about on the next day that an evil spirit from God came forcefully on Saul, and he raved [madly] inside his house, while David was playing the harp with his hand, as usual; and there was a spear in Saul’s hand.” 1 Samuel 18:10 AMP. Saul was in disobedience before God, so God allowed and evil spirit to come into Saul, for his heart was wicked and jealous. When people have an envious, jealous and wicked heart, evil spirits will not only enter them, but also visit them in dreams to make them participate in violent and evil actions, in order to train them to make them do it while they are awake. We need to seek deliverance from every bondage and spiritual contamination in prayer and if necessary, with the help of mature believers.
16- An undisciplined mind: “For even though they knew God [as the Creator], they did not honor Him as God or give thanks [for His wondrous creation]. On the contrary, they became worthless in their thinking [godless, with pointless reasonings, and silly speculations], and their foolish heart was darkened. “Romans 1:21. When people don’t honor, not give thanks to God, they open the door to evil spirits that will send them all kind of imagination and control their thoughts, and therefore their dreams and hearts will get invaded by darkness, this represent evil spirits, animal, and insects attacks in dreams, and the powers of darkness. That’s why we have to cast down every evil imagination and take captive every thought to the obedience of Christ, I meditate in the following passage often in mind in confess it with my mouth.
“[Inasmuch as we] refute arguments and theories and reasonings and every proud and lofty thing that sets itself up against the [true] knowledge of God; and we lead every thought and purpose away captive into the obedience of Christ (the Messiah, the Anointed One).” 2 Corinthians 10:5
17- Empty mind. There are practices like yoga, and new age, that requires people to keep their mind in blank, but that is not good, an empty mind is a field ready for evil spirits to move in.
“But, when the unclean spirit has gone out of a man, it roams through dry [arid] places in search of rest, but it does not find any.Then it says, I will go back to my house from which I came out. And when it arrives, it finds the place unoccupied, swept, put in order, and decorated. Then it goes and brings with it seven other spirits more wicked than itself, and they go in and make their home there. And the last condition of that man becomes worse than the first. So also, shall it be with this wicked generation.” Matthew 12:43-45. When a person has been delivered from evil spirits and don’t remain free by creating new habits, having fellowship with God and other believers, studying and meditating in the Bible, fasting and praying, etc. then, the evil spirits come back with 7 more each, and they will appear in the person’s dreams, sometimes disguised as a dad loved one, or someone the person, have known in real life, or have only seen in dreams. We need to seek deliverance daily, and the renewing of our minds with the word of God to protect our minds and dreams.
18- Believing fake signs and wonders:
“Then if anyone says to you, ‘Look, here is the Christ (the Messiah, the Anointed)!’ or, ‘Look, He is there!’ do not believe it; for false Christs and false prophets will arise, and they will provide signs and wonders in order to deceive, if [such a thing were] possible, even the elect [those God has chosen for Himself]. But be on your guard; I have told you everything in advance.” Mark 13:21-23. We have to be very careful in these days, not everyone performing miracles is from God, we need discernment by studying the Bible and having fellowship with God we may be able to identify and differentiate which is from him and which is not.
19-Lack of forgiveness: “ Should you not have had mercy on your fellow slave [who owed you little by comparison], as I had mercy on you?’ And in wrath his master turned him over to the torturers (jailers) until he paid all that he owed. My heavenly Father will also do the same to [every one of] you, if each of you does not forgive his brother from your heart.” Matthew 18:33-35. When we repent God forgives us from all our sins, so he expects for us to also forgive others, that doesn’t mean that we are going to justify what they did to us, or that we are going to allow them into our lives for them to hurt us again, it means that we let the debt they owe us into God’s hands, so we are free from hatred, and bitterness. The act of forgiving also closes the doors to the enemies in our dreams and cast the torturers out of our lives.
20- Anger: “Be angry [at sin—at immorality, at injustice, at ungodly behavior], yet do not sin; do not let your anger [cause you shame, nor allow it to] last until the sun goes down. And do not give the devil an opportunity [to lead you into sin by holding a grudge, or nurturing anger, or harboring resentment, or cultivating bitterness].” Ephesians 4:26-27. It says do not let the sun goes down while you are angry, because evil spirits will come into your dreams when you go to bed angry, so take a deep breath and pray before you go to sleep asking God to help you forgive and release that anger, admit that you are hurt about that situation and that you need His help and healing.
In conclusion, we have to learn to identify the Source of our dreams and pray correctly for any of the causes we may identify. So, that we may receive freedom, and the peace of God will guard our hearts, thoughts and dreams in Christ Jesus.
